Nato: ARF HEADQUARTERS ENHANCES COLLECTIVE READINESS THROUGH LONG TERM PLANNING TRAINING 2026

SOLBIATE OLONA (VA). From 5 to 9 October 2026, the Allied Reaction Force (ARF) Headquarters, under the leadership of the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps – Italy (NRDC-ITA), conducted the Long Term Planning Training (LTPT) 2026 at the “Ugo Mara” military base. This iteration further reinforces NRDC-ITA’s strategic role as a key hub for education, institutional training, and operational readiness within the Alliance.

The training activity brought together military personnel from affiliated units, the Italian Army (including representatives from the Land Operational Forces Command), and various ARF Components. The primary objective was to hone staff-level planning capabilities, with a particular emphasis on long-term operational planning and multi-domain integration.

A central focus of the course was to establish a unified understanding of the NATO Operations Planning Process (OPP) at the operational level, driven by the rigorous application of the Comprehensive Operations Planning Directive (COPD). Through a balanced combination of academic instruction and practical syndicate planning activities based on complex crisis scenarios, participants significantly strengthened their ability to apply standardized NATO procedures.

The active participation of Italian Army personnel stands as a clear demonstration of NRDC-ITA’s function as an essential broker and facilitator between national capabilities and NATO frameworks. By merging national and multinational expertise, the headquarters successfully fosters a shared operational culture, streamlining common procedures and enhancing the interoperability of Italian assets within a wider Allied context.

Ultimately, the successful completion of the Long Term Planning Training 2026 highlights the value of the ARF Headquarters as an agile environment where education, innovation, and operational expertise converge. This effort directly strengthens the capacity of Allied and partner personnel to plan and operate effectively together, robustly contributing to NATO’s collective readiness, deterrence, and defense posture.
