ROME. From 6 to 7 December, Operation EUNAVFOR MED IRINI will host the 12th edition of the “Shared Awareness and De-confliction in the Mediterranean” (SHADE MED) Conference.

This year’s conference theme is Managing common challenges together in the Mediterranean”.

The aim is to encourage participants to carry out an in-depth reflection on what the region is experiencing. As last year, the event will be co-organized together with NATO Maritime Command (MARCOM).

This year’s conference theme is “Managing common challenges together in the Mediterranean”

The Mediterranean region has been the cradle for the development of many civilizations over the centuries, it has been the center of trade and commerce, but also continues to experience conflicts and regional instability.

The Mediterranean as cross-roads between continents still experiences a multitude of challenges, emerging from within the region and as a spill-over from outside.

Illicit trafficking of people, arms, drugs and other goods is oftentimes interconnected and is not constrained by geographical borders.

Linkages between and roles of non-state and state actors are blurred creating difficulties for finding solutions on pressing issues in this European neighborhood.

The two-day conference will be enriched by the presence of high-level speakers, who will provide participants with inputs and perspectives for discussion in the framework of a main panel and three thematic working groups.

The main panel, titled EU and NATO “after” the Ukraine invasion: tackling common challenges and strengthening crisis response, security and stability”, will focus on the analysis of geopolitical crises and tensions that undermine the region’s stability, the instruments to shape a shared security and defense vision, and the relevance of partner engagement.

SHADE MED is a forum, in which representatives from many nations and organizations with interests in the Mediterranean can meet and exchange views.

It is thereby a powerful tool to facilitate a reciprocal understanding and to identify areas for potential co-operation.

SHADE MED focuses on challenges, areas for de-conflicting and – where applicable – improving coordination and employment of military and civilian resources as well as integrating international efforts to achieve maximum efficiency and effectiveness in managing objectives related to the security and stability in the Mediterranean.

The conference represents a unique opportunity for exchanging information and experiences; sharing proposals for different organizations, ranging from diplomatic representations and Armed Forces/Coastguards of the coastal States of the Mediterranean, international organizations such as the European Union and the United Nations.
